About the House

During a shutdown in a worldwide pandemic, might not seem like a perfect time to find the right house -- but after searching for years -- our family found the right one for us at the right time for us. A custom rambler on a high bluff waterfront property with views of Holmes Harbor.

Facing the sunrise with five wooded acres, walking trails through towering evergreens, and incredible madrone or madrona trees. If you are not familiar - these are one of my favorite trees - beloved northwest native, broadleaf evergreen with iconic red peeling bark found growing into gnarled shapes along the coast.

Located in a quiet neighborhood, most days we see eagles more often than we see other people. We spent the summer of 2020 working and playing as a family -- cleaning, painting, updating, and hundreds more projects both small and large.  We also tried our hand at boating & crabbing, biking & hiking. Getting a change of scenery, having a project as a family and taking trips out to Whidbey was an amazing blessing in a difficult year.  Now as our family gets older we enjoy Whidbey just as much from new perspectives.  Truly making magic and memories for all ages.

Frequently asked questions

01/

What's the neighborhood  and house like?

This is an area populated by retired folks, summer houses and a few other vacation rentals.  Our neighbors are close, but the vegetation between homes gives us a good amount of privacy.  We are continually amazed to have a road we can walk on and a place so quiet you can hear a dog barking across the harbor.

The house is full of  unfussy, restful, pacific northwest vibes - where the forest meets the sea. Rocks and barnacles and driftwood are what to expect if you venture down to the beach.

A rustic rambler on a fifty-five foot bluff with views of Holmes Harbor and mountains in the distance.  Filled with spots to relax and to be inspired. We think of it as a spot for grown up summer camp -- with wildlife watching, s'mores, forest walks and art opportunities.  Or a weekend hideaway -- for long beach strolls, hot tub soaking and cozy movie nights.

Is it dog friendly?

Yes, we have two sweet dogs and they love Whidbey trips.  If you want to bring your pup along, we request your keep them on a leash while on the property.  The fifty foot bluff is a obvious risk for a dog with an enthusiasm for chasing the rogue bunnies, squirrels and deer that are bouncing around and we have had an increase in coyotes in the area.  We keep dog towels, food &  water bowls and extra leashes at the house -- as well as a few dedicated blankets if they want to be on the furniture relaxing with you.  Whidbey Island seems to love dogs as well, many local places are dog friendly.  If your dog wants a free roaming adventure there is a large beautiful off leash dog park at nearby historic Greenbank Farms.

Can we access the beach?

YES!   Possibly the most exciting project we had going on when we purchased this house was a rebuild of the stairs with our neighbor.  We are so thrilled to be able access the beach and have been making the most of it in all weather.  The kids counted - it's 100 steps down - with a retractable set of metal stairs for the last few steps. It's a peaceful private beach where you are more likely to see a seal than a person.  It's a rugged rocky beach with a view of Mount Baker and Mount Rainier.

04/

Is there wifi/good cell service?

We do a lot of Work from Whidbey, enjoying the flexible days of online school and work -- The wifi is sufficient for video calls and online streaming. The cell service is not great in or near the house, but pretty good closer to the water. We have a few desks set up in the bedrooms but the best working from home view might be in the chairs on the bluff edge. Nothing like a bald eagle cruising by to inspire you -- or to convince you to take the day off.

Washer & Dryer?  Hairdryer?  Iron?  Conditioner? Kitchen Staples?

Yes. and Yes.  Hopefully this makes your stay more relaxing and there is not a lot of packing needed! We have tried to make it simple to head out to and take a restorative weekend with as little fuss as possible.   Our amenities include some essential cooking tools, good spices, some dog toys and some art supplies.   Click here for a more comprehensive list of our "essentials"

The best time to catch the ferry?

Our house is located in Greenbank just about 20 minutes north of the Clinton ferry terminal. The Mukilteo/Clinton ferry is very popular and has a dedicated population of regular commuters.  It's a short trip and runs every half hour.  With all the worker shortages we have had a hard time predicting waits - but we check on the official website before leaving & use an app called Ferry FYI to see what the recent wait times have been. We also try not to head on island on Friday afternoon or off island on Sunday afternoon.  Plan to wait, pack a water bottle and remember the commute is worth it.
